MEXICO CITY, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian manager Andre Jardine said he hoped to "continue creating history" in Mexican football after guiding Club America to a third successive Liga MX title on Sunday.
A 1-1 draw at Monterrey gave America a 3-2 aggregate victory in the final, the Mexico City outfit's 16th top-flight crown.
"We achieved something very important that I value a lot," said Jardine, who joined the club in June 2023. "I want to be able to continue creating history here. I'd like to think that I can win more titles and keep striving to play better football."
The 45-year-old former Brazil under-23 boss admitted he felt fortunate to have arrived in America when the club was already on a "path to success."
"I'm part of an impressive institution," he said. "I think I am a little lucky to have come at a time when the club was ready to win. Without taking away my merits, which I know I have, this idea that I am the man who changed everything is really not true because it is a very well-organized club with excellent players."
Sunday's result in the northern city of Guadalupe capped a remarkable turnaround for the Eagles, who finished eighth at the end of the regular season in November.
He admitted that those who dismissed America's title chances had provided extra motivation for his team.
"It has a different flavor because we were not considered favorites by anyone, not even one person in Mexican soccer," Jardine said. "But inside, we knew we were capable of being competitive. This is a reward for the commitment and mental strength of the group," he added. ■
