TRIPOLI, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah on Monday emphasized that holding elections is the only way to resolve Libya's protracted political deadlock.
Dbeibah made the remarks during talks with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who also chairs the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, in Tripoli. According to a statement from the Libyan government, the meeting focused on national reconciliation efforts in Libya led by the African Union and explored ways to enhance cooperation between Libya and Congo.
The Libyan prime minister reiterated that elections are the sole solution to the country's conflict, stressing that "the division is not among the Libyan people but within the ruling political class," the statement said.
Both leaders called for unified regional and international support for Libya's reconciliation process, underscoring the African Union's role in fostering peace.
The Congolese president proposed creating a national reconciliation charter and encouraged Libyan factions to adopt it as part of efforts to rebuild trust and stability.
Libya has faced ongoing political and security turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. Disputes among rival factions over electoral laws derailed general elections scheduled for December 2021, exacerbating divisions between the nation's two rival governments -- one in the east and the other in the west. ■
