PHNOM PENH, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia drew 2-2 with Malaysia in the opening soccer match of the 2024 ASEAN Championship Group A at Phnom Penh's Olympic Stadium on Sunday night.
Malaysia took the lead through midfielder Stuart Wilkin in the 35th minute, but Cambodia equalized early in the second half through Abdel Kader Coulibaly, and Ty Sa put Cambodia ahead on the hour mark.
However, Fergus Tierney spared Malaysia's blushes with an equalizer in the 74th minute.
In the FIFA rankings, Cambodia sits 180th, while Malaysia is 132nd.
The 2024 ASEAN Championship runs until January 5, 2025. Cambodia is placed in Group A alongside Malaysia, Singapore, East Timor and Thailand. ■
