ISTANBUL, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Turkish officials in Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Türkiye, are encouraging Chinese tourists to explore its unique traditions, rich cultural heritage, and historic landmarks.
Local authorities believe that the city's unique blend of folk traditions and craftsmanship will appeal to Chinese tourists with a passion for historical legacies.
According to Governor Aziz Yildirim, one example that "tops the list of must-see experiences" is the Horon dance, an essential part of the city's cultural identity.
"This energetic dance, accompanied by the soulful sounds of the kemence, a distinctive traditional string instrument, represents a cultural celebration in which both locals and tourists can join," Yildirim told Xinhua.
Handicrafts are another key element of Trabzon's cultural appeal, Yildirim noted, citing Kazaziye art as a prime example of exceptional craftsmanship.
The traditional craft involves wrapping gold and silver threads around silk or nylon wires to create delicate and detailed pieces of art, often used in jewelry and decorative objects.
Meanwhile, Trabzon's Mayor Ahmet Metin Genc expressed his hope to "strengthen the close relationship" between Türkiye and China through tourism and eagerly anticipated Chinese tourists visiting the city known for its "Sumela Monastery, stunning mountains, plateaus, lush greenery, and scenic coastline."
Perched on a dramatic cliff at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, the Sumela Monastery, now a museum, was once a Greek Orthodox monastery in the Pontic Mountains.
Genc also mentioned that the local municipality is considering adding Chinese cuisine to the city's offerings, helping Chinese visitors feel more at home while enjoying Trabzon's local delicacies.
Trabzon's Director of Culture and Tourism Tamer Erdogan said the city has received only 933 Chinese tourists over the past 10 months, a figure that fell short of expectations.
Despite this, Erdogan expressed confidence that increased promotional efforts could help attract more visitors in the coming year. "We always welcome the people of China to Trabzon. The city is harmonious and offers a place where they can feel at home," he told Xinhua.
According to the latest data from Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the number of visitors from China to Türkiye in the first nine months of 2024 reached 352,473, marking an increase of 77.29 percent. ■
