JAKARTA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- A total of 20 people have been killed in flash floods and landslides that occurred in Indonesia's North Sumatra province last Saturday, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported on Tuesday.
"As of today, the fatalities include 10 from Karo Regency, four from Deli Serdang, four from Padang Lawas, and two from South Tapanuli," said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari in a press release.
The hydrometeorological disaster occurred following heavy rainfall that caused flash floods in South Tapanuli and Deli Serdang, as well as landslides in Padang Lawas and Karo on Saturday.
In addition, six houses were severely damaged by the flash floods in Deli Serdang and landslides in Karo, along with damage to several schools and places of worship.
Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage and searching for two missing people in Deli Serdang.
The agency has urged people to remain vigilant as the peak of the rainy season is expected to continue until next year. ■
