BAGHDAD, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi government on Thursday received five berths of Al-Faw Grand Port in southern Basra province from the South Korean company Daewoo in charge of the project.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani presided over the handover ceremony of the five berths, according to a statement from al-Sudani's media office.
"The project will transform Iraq from a country dependent on the ports of others to a maritime state," al-Sudani said, stressing the port "has effectively entered the global trade and transport routes that pass through the Middle East."
The statement noted that the country's Development Road Project, originating from Al-Faw Grand Port, will serve as a hub for economic integration in the region.
The Iraqi government proposed the Development Road Project, a massive infrastructure project, in May 2023, with the goal of linking southern Iraq to the country's border with Türkiye, further extending into European rail and road networks. ■
