BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Velez Sarsfield missed the chance to stretch their lead in Argentina's Primera Division standings when they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Belgrano on Saturday.
Nicolas Fernandez gave the visitors an early lead at El Fortin with a low finish after combining with Gabriel Compagnucci.
But Velez equalized through Thiago Fernandez, who took a steadying touch after Braian Romero's pass before slotting a low finish past Paraguayan goalkeeper Juan Espinola.
The result leaves Velez with 38 points, four points ahead of second-placed Huracan, who have a game in hand. Belgrano are 12th in the 28-team standings, 12 points off the pace.
In other Primera Division fixtures on Saturday, Godoy Cruz drew 1-1 at Independiente, Newell's Old Boys were held to a 1-1 home draw by Sarmiento, Rosario Central drew 0-0 at Instituto Cordoba, and Independiente Rivadavia won 1-0 at home to San Lorenzo. ■
