PHNOM PENH, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chea Chanto, former governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), died on Friday at the age of 73 due to illness, according to an official statement.
"The General Secretariat of the National Assembly (GSNA) is saddened to inform the public that Chea Chanto, a member of parliament for Kampong Thom province and honorary governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. local time at the age of 73 due to illness," said the GSNA's statement.
The funeral will be held at his house in Phnom Penh's Chroy Changvar district, the statement added.
Chanto was appointed as the NBC's honorary governor after he stepped down from the position of the central bank's governor in July 2023, handing over the position to his daughter, Chea Serey.
Chanto served as the NBC's governor from 1998 to 2023. ■
