SEOUL, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's biggest automaker Hyundai Motor logged its record third-quarter revenue thanks to strong demand in domestic and North American markets as well as favorable currency rates, the company said Thursday.

Revenue increased 4.7 percent from a year earlier to 42.93 trillion won (31.1 billion U.S. dollars) in the July-September quarter, marking the highest third-quarter figure in the carmaker's history.

Hyundai sold 1,011,808 units across the world in the third quarter, down 3.2 percent compared to the same quarter of last year.

Despite the overall sales decrease, the revenue gained ground on the back of stronger demand for high-end vehicles and favorable currency rates.

Hyundai's domestic automotive sales rose 1.8 percent to 169,901 units, and sales in North America grew 9.3 percent to 300,319 units.

Sales of electrified models, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles, jumped 19.5 percent to 201,849 units.

Operating profit, however, shrank 6.5 percent from a year earlier to 3.58 trillion won (2.6 billion dollars) in the third quarter, and net income dwindled 3.0 percent to 3.21 trillion won (2.3 billion dollars).

The profit reduction came after the company reflected provisions relevant to a one-off preemptive warranty extension.

Excluding the provisions, the third-quarter operating profit reached 3.9 trillion won (2.8 billion dollars), the carmaker noted.
