DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 31,282,331 Tanzanians, equivalent to 94.83 percent of eligible voters, have registered to vote in civic elections slated for Nov. 27, a government official announced on Monday night.

Minister of State in the President's Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Governments Mohamed Mchengerwa said in a statement that the voters were registered in 10 days from Oct. 11 to Oct. 20.

"This is a big turnout of registered voters," said Mchengerwa, adding that the target was to enroll over 32.988 million voters.

According to the statement, out of the 31.282 million registered voters, 15.237 million, equivalent to 48.71 percent, were men, while 16.046 million, equivalent to 51.29 percent, were women.

The statement also noted that all 26 regions on Tanzania's mainland did an excellent job of registering voters.

On Oct. 11, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the registration process when she registered in Sokoine Village in the Chamwino District of the Dodoma Region.

The president urged fellow citizens to register in big numbers ahead of the polls to enable them to participate in the democratic process.
