DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Saturday that the Chinese-upgraded Tanga Port has increased ship traffic and boosted the amount of cargo it handles.

The port, upgraded by China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, is part of Tanzania's strategy to expand its capacity to accommodate larger ships, attract more vessels, and increase its cargo volume, Hassan said on her official X platform.

The upgrade of the port along the Indian Ocean has resulted in a more than 100 percent rise in both ship traffic and revenue collection, according to the president.

"This project is already delivering results, with significant growth in operations," she said.

She said that the government remains committed to enhancing infrastructure across the country to ensure Tanzania fully benefits from its natural resources.

Donald Gaile, acting manager of Tanga Port, said the upgrade involved dredging and the construction of new 450-meter-long berths, allowing ships to dock directly at the pier and offload cargo.

He said that the port can now accommodate ships carrying over 100,000 tonnes of cargo from around the world.
