PHNOM PENH, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's first traditional mixed martial arts championship began at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on Friday.
Thong Khon, a senior minister and president of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, highlighted the significance of the three-day event, which features 425 traditional martial arts practitioners, including 77 female athletes, from across the country.
"This historic event aims to enhance, preserve, and develop Cambodia's ancient martial arts," he said during the opening ceremony.
The championship is divided into three categories: professional, amateur, and exhibition, encompassing a total of 12 events.
Khon also emphasized the event's role in fostering friendship among the athletes, urging them to adhere to the principles of fair play.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, speaking earlier this week, stressed the importance of preserving and developing the kingdom's traditional martial arts, such as the UNESCO-listed Kun Lbokator and Cambodian kickboxing Kun Khmer, to ensure these combat techniques remain alive and continue to thrive.
He noted that preserving and promoting these ancient arts not only enhances physical strength and self-defense skills but also honors the legacy of past generations. ■
