WARSAW, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in Brussels, Belgium on Thursday that European Union (EU) leaders had expressed "understanding" regarding Poland's stance on migration, reported Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Ahead of Thursday's European Council summit in Brussels, Tusk participated in a meeting on migration organized by Italy, Denmark, and the Netherlands, attended by several EU leaders and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"I've met with all the major players and achieved what I aimed for, which is mainly understanding," Tusk told PAP.

Tusk unveiled a multi-year migration strategy last Saturday, which included a temporary suspension of the right to asylum. He stressed the importance of European recognition of Poland's decision, explaining that the right to asylum is being exploited by hostile nations and human traffickers.

"It's not about a complete halt to the right to asylum, but rather a temporary, territorial suspension of accepting applications in areas where the border is breached illegally by force, specifically at the Belarusian border," Tusk said, adding that no EU member state has objected to Poland's right to implement such measures.
