JERUSALEM, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Thai worker was killed by an ammunition blast in the village of Yir'on in northern Israel, near the Lebanese border, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on Friday.

The Upper Galilee Regional Council, which has jurisdiction over the village, reported that the victim was Nisan Miram, 42, who worked in the agricultural sector.

The Israeli news website Ynet reported that the ammunition was probably previously fired by Hezbollah and had not been cleared from the village.

Israeli Magen David Adom emergency medical service initially reported that Miram was killed by an anti-tank missile fired from Lebanon, but an army investigation revealed a different circumstance.

Following the incident, Israel's Interior Minister Moshe Arbel stated that it is prohibited by law to employ foreign workers in the displaced communities in northern Israel.

The minister added that he had agreed with the Population and Immigration Authority to tighten enforcement against employers.
