BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Former Boca Juniors midfielder Fernando Gago is close to rejoining his former club as manager, according to widespread media reports in Argentina.
The 38-year-old is currently in charge of Guadalajara but has told the Mexican top-flight side of his intention to leave, according to news portal TNT Sports.
It added that Boca had agreed to pay two million U.S. dollars to activate a release clause in Gago's contract.
The Buenos Aires giants have been searching for a manager since parting ways with Diego Martinez on September 29 amid a poor run of results.
Boca are currently 10th in Argentina's Primera Division standings with just six wins from 17 games, 12 points behind leaders Velez Sarsfield.
Gago, who represented Boca Juniors, Real Madrid, Valencia, Roma, Velez Sarsfield and Argentina's national team during a 16-year playing career, turned to management in 2021.
He had spells in charge of Aldosivi and Racing Club before joining Guadalajara in December 2023. ■
