CAIRO, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for self-restraint to prevent a potential regional war amid escalating Israeli attacks.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty warned that such a conflict could have "dangerous repercussions" for regional stability.

He updated Mikati on Egypt's efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire and underscored the importance of empowering Lebanese institutions, particularly the army, to maintain stability.

Abdelatty assured Mikati that Egypt would continue providing political and humanitarian support to Lebanon and urged all parties to unite in electing a president to resolve the ongoing "presidential vacancy crisis."

Earlier on Tuesday, Abdelatty also discussed the situation with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, reiterating calls for intensified efforts to avert regional conflict.

Since Sept. 23, Israel has launched an intensive air campaign on Lebanon, dubbed "Arrows of the North," marking a significant escalation with Hezbollah.

The cross-border exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel, which began on Oct. 8, 2023, have raised concerns of a wider conflict amid the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict in Gaza.
