RAMALLAH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian was killed on Thursday by the Israeli army while allegedly attempting a stabbing attack near Hebron in the southern West Bank, according to sources.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement that it was informed by the Civil Affairs Authority, which coordinates with Israel on civilian matters, about the death of 23-year-old Salah Shawahin, who was killed by the Israeli army fire near Hebron.

The statement did not provide additional details about the incident. Local Palestinian sources reported that Israeli forces fired live ammunition at a young man in southern Hebron, resulting in his injury and subsequent death.

For its part, the Israeli army announced in a statement that it had killed a Palestinian who "carried a knife" at the entrance of a military base in the southern West Bank.

No Palestinian group has claimed responsibility for the "attempted stabbing" yet, which occurred amid rising tensions and increasing armed clashes in various cities, villages, and refugee camps across the West Bank following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict last October.

Since October 2023, over 700 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli shelling and gunfire throughout the West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
