MADRID, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Club secured a 2-0 victory over AZ Alkmaar in their first Europa League game at San Mames Stadium in six years, thanks to second-half goals from Inaki Williams and Oihan Sancet.

The home side faced a tough and well-organized opponent and came close to scoring in the first half when left-back Yuri Berchiche struck the bar with a shot from outside the penalty area. However, Athletic had to wait until 20 minutes before full-time for the breakthrough. The impressive Nico Williams provided a low cross, which his elder brother Inaki Williams converted from around 10 yards out.

Nico Williams continued to be a key playmaker, setting up the second goal with a run from the left wing. His blocked shot fell to Sancet, who calmly side-footed home with five minutes left on the clock.

In contrast, Real Sociedad were unable to secure a home win in the same competition, as a much-changed side fell 2-1 to Anderlecht. Real Sociedad started well, taking the lead in just five minutes after Anderlecht's defensive error allowed Umar Sadiq to win possession and set up Pablo Marin, who scored with a first-time left-foot volley.

Sadiq continued to pressure Anderlecht goalkeeper Colin Coosemans, but Anderlecht equalized in the 28th minute when Luis Vazquez found space to beat Alex Remiro with a diagonal shot. Real Sociedad had appealed for a foul on Sadiq earlier in the play.

Theo Leoni put Anderlecht ahead in the 39th minute with a powerful shot from outside the area that left Remiro with no chance. Remiro managed to save a free kick comfortably later on, while Orri Oskarsson came close to leveling for Sociedad, grazing the bar with a powerful shot. However, Anderlecht defended their lead effectively in the second half.

The game was marred by incidents caused by visiting supporters, leading to five arrests after objects were thrown at home fans in neighboring stands.
