NICOSIA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Arab countries ambassadors in Cyprus said they held an "emergency meeting" in Nicosia on Monday to discuss a joint plan to support Palestine and Lebanon.

"The purpose of the meeting was to mobilize efforts and discuss a joint action plan in support of Palestine and Lebanon in order to exert diplomatic pressure for an end to Israeli aggression and a ceasefire in both Palestine and Lebanon," a statement by the embassy of Palestine said.

The meeting came as reports suggested that Israel may be preparing a land operation in southern Lebanon following air and missile strikes which killed several leaders of Hezbollah and other organizations.

The eastern Mediterranean island received over 60,000 people who left Lebanon during the 2006 war. It has also facilitated the evacuation of people fleeing other conflict areas, such as Sudan.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis said on Monday that Cyprus is at its "maximum state of readiness" for a potential evacuation of European Union and third country nationals from Lebanon.
