WELLINGTON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Antarctic-related activities contributed nearly a quarter of 1 billion dollars to New Zealand's economy last year, according to a report on Monday, highlighting substantial economic benefits and underscoring the strategic importance of Antarctica to New Zealand.
The biennial report, produced by Lincoln University and supported by the Christchurch Antarctic Office, said Antarctic-related activities based in New Zealand continue to be a significant economic driver, contributing 229.3 million NZ dollars to the national economy last year.
The study covers National Antarctic Programs, tourism, fishing, education and research and Antarctic heritage, among other industry sectors.
Christchurch of the South Island serves as New Zealand's Antarctic hub, among five Antarctic Gateway cities around the world, said Antarctica New Zealand Acting Chief Executive Jordy Hendrikx.
"Christchurch has been used as a deployment port to Antarctica for more than a century," Hendrikx said, adding that it's an important part of the city's history, with Antarctic-related activities generating 158.3 million NZ dollars in the Canterbury region.
David Tayler, head of the Christchurch Antarctic Office, said the city's connection with Antarctica is an opportunity for innovation, research and climate awareness.
The Antarctic community supports more than 3,000 full-time jobs in Canterbury, with over 800 firms supplying goods and services to the National Antarctic Programs, which delivers significant economic impact, Tayler said. Enditem (1 NZ dollar equals 0.64 U.S. dollar)
