BEIRUT, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 76 injured on Friday in Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut, the group's Al-Manar TV reported.
Lebanon's al-Jadeed TV said about 10 successive airstrikes hit Hezbollah's headquarters in Dahieh, a southern suburb of Beirut. TV footage showed smoke rising from the site.
Israel Defense Forces Spokesman Daniel Hagari confirmed the strikes, saying they targeted Hezbollah's main headquarters beneath residential buildings in Dahieh.
Initial reports in Israeli media suggested the strikes may have been aimed at Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's secretary-general, but later accounts indicated he was unharmed.
The airstrikes rocked Beirut shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Netanyahu's office said that the Israeli prime minister approved the airstrike earlier Friday from his hotel, and decided to return to Israel after the UN address earlier than scheduled.
At the General Assembly on Friday, Netanyahu ruled out an immediate truce in the escalating conflict with Lebanon. He also warned of threats from Iran, suggesting Israel faces multiple fronts of conflict organized by Tehran.
Israel began extensive airstrikes across Lebanon on Monday, marking the most significant military action since 2006. According to Lebanon's health ministry, these strikes have resulted in nearly 700 deaths in the country this week.
The International Organization for Migration estimated on Thursday that more than 200,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon since last October when Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel in support of Hamas. ■
