ULAN BATOR, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- All first graders across Mongolia will undergo medical examinations during the first and third semesters of the 2024-2025 academic year, the country's Ministry of Education announced on Thursday.

As part of the "Healthy and Safe School" initiative, jointly launched by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, over 73,000 first graders nationwide will receive early health screenings, including assessments for cardiovascular, eye, and dental health.

Based on the health check-up results, the Ministry of Education is expected to prioritize the children's health by providing parents and caretakers with advice on preventive measures and focusing on teaching children healthy habits.

The Mongolian government's long-term development policy, known as "Vision 2050," aims to promote a healthy, active lifestyle, develop an accessible and effective healthcare system, and enhance public health. The "Healthy and Safe School" initiative is a key component of the long-term strategy.

In Mongolia, with a population of 3.5 million, the average life expectancy is 70.8 years for women and 60.6 years for men, with the government aiming to reduce the gap as quickly as possible.

Authorities believe that preventive and early-detection check-ups will help reduce the risk of fatal diseases among Mongolians and narrow the life expectancy gap between men and women.
