JAKARTA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo launched the construction of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit East-West Corridor Phase 1 on Wednesday at the Thamrin MRT Station in Central Jakarta.

"We aim to expand the scope of development, so today the MRT will be built again for the East-West phase 1, from Medan Satria to Tomang over 24.5 km," Widodo said.

He is confident that the new MRT line will transform Jakarta into a global city with modern transportation infrastructure.

There will be 21 stations along the new line, including both underground and elevated stations, with the Thamrin Station serving as a junction between the North-South and East-West MRT lines.

The MRT Jakarta light rail transit system is being developed to alleviate congestion, improve city mobility, and modernize transportation infrastructure. The first phase of MRT Jakarta, the North-South Corridor, has been in public use since March 2019, integrating with other transportation modes such as buses and commuter rail services.
