BEIRUT, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Wednesday that around 140,000 people have been displaced from southern Lebanon to other parts of the country due to the ongoing clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.
Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Mikati stated that internal displacement is ongoing and that the emergency authority is working to provide necessary assistance and relief, according to a statement released by the Lebanese Council of Ministers.
Mikati condemned the ongoing "Israeli aggression," which he said targets civilians, medical teams, and civil defense.
He urged the international community to increase efforts and pressure Israel to cease its actions against Lebanon and revealed plans for Lebanon to file a new complaint with the UN Security Council over Israeli violations.
Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas' attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon. ■
