BRATISLAVA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The gunman who attempted to assassinate Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in May will face additional charges, according to the country's prosecutor general on Thursday.

After facing a charge of attempted murder, the suspect -- named by Slovak media as 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula -- now faces terror charges, the Associated Press reports.

Fico sustained four gunshot wounds in an attack on May 15 when he greeted supporters after chairing a government meeting in the central Slovak town of Handlova. If his recovery goes smoothly, Fico said he would return to work at the end of June or early July.

The gunman was arrested on the spot and later placed in pretrial detention by a special penal court in Pezinok, northeast of the capital Bratislava.
