UNITED NATIONS, May 27 (Xinhua) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is saddened by the catastrophic landslide in Papua New Guinea that has claimed hundreds of lives, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Sunday.
"The secretary-general is deeply saddened by the reported loss of hundreds of lives in a massive landslide in Papua New Guinea," Dujarric said.
The top UN official extended his "heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims" and expressed solidarity with the people and government of the affected nation.
The secretary-general emphasized the readiness of the United Nations to "offer additional assistance at this challenging time," ensuring that the global body remains a steadfast ally in recovery and rebuilding efforts. ■
