JERUSALEM, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Israeli football teams SC Dimona and Shimshon Tel Aviv jointly set a new world record for the longest penalty shootout in history on Monday night, with a total of 56 kicks.

The record was set during a promotion playoff match in the Israeli third league, played in the southern city of Dimona in the Negev desert.

After a 2-2 draw following extra time, Dimona won the shootout 23-22, with each team taking 28 penalty kicks to set the world record.

The 56th and final kick, taken by Shimshon's goalkeeper Avihay Dahan, was saved by Dimona's goalkeeper Gal Navon, ending a shootout that lasted about 45 minutes.

The previous shootout record of 54 penalty kicks was set in March 2022, in a match between Washington and Bedlington in England's Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup.
