Death toll rises to 13 in volcanic eruption in Indonesia's Sumatra

The death toll from the eruption of Indonesia's Marapi volcano on Sumatra Island has reached 13, with 10 individuals still missing.

JAKARTA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the eruption of Indonesia's Marapi volcano on Sumatra Island has reached 13, with 10 individuals still missing.

Ongoing eruption coupled with drizzling rain have impeded search efforts for the missing hikers. Five bodies have been recovered and identified, while the evacuation process for the remaining eight is underway, according to Abdul Malik, head of the Padang search and rescue agency, on Tuesday.

Out of the 75 hikers in total, 52 survivors have been successfully evacuated. While some have already returned home, others, including three individuals with burns and broken bones, are still undergoing medical treatment in hospitals.

Additionally, four districts surrounding the 2,891-meter-high mountain experienced volcanic ash rain.
