KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Provincial authorities in south Afghanistan's Kandahar province inaugurated a rehabilitation center for drug-addicted people on Thursday, deputy director of the provincial health department Sayed Ahmad Shadab said.

The rehabilitation center with 30 beds formally opened in Takhta Pul district in the morning, providing medical treatment to any addict who gets admission here, the official said, adding that the facility would be upgraded to a 100-bed facility in the future.

Drug addicts from Kandahar, Helmand and Nimroz provinces would be brought here for recovery.

More than 3 million out of Afghanistan's 35 million population have reportedly been addicted to drugs. The Afghan caretaker government has banned poppy cultivation, processing to drug and drug trafficking since April last year, besides rounding up the addicts from elsewhere and taking them to rehabilitation centers.
