BUENOS AIRES, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Saturday called for Ibero-American unity to achieve development with social inclusion.

"If we want a fair and sustainable Ibero-America, the first step is to reestablish unity," he said at the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, stressing the importance of "multilateralism" for the region's progress in the international arena.

According to a press release from the Presidency, Fernandez called for "a unity that does not allow economic blockades that affect the peoples of the region, a unity necessary to preserve common interests where we respect ideological diversity."

He also called for "rebuilding solidarity in the region" and said that "effective inclusion generates employment, consolidates the domestic market and opens possibilities for international trade."

"There is no solution in isolation," Fernandez said, urging the Southern Common Market, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the summit to "think about solutions from (the perspective of) multilateralism."

The summit was held on Friday and Saturday in the Dominican Republic under the slogan "Together for a fair and sustainable Ibero-America," with a focus on four strategic pillars -- the environmental crisis, digital transformation, food security and the international financial architecture, according to the Presidency.
