BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Water Resources on Friday urged some of its southern regions to take preventive measures for heavy rains and floods as this year's flood season began.
Heavy rainfall lashed China's southern regions in the past few days. From 8 a.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Friday, the total precipitation in an area of 371,000 square km in south China surpassed 50 mm, data from the ministry showed.
The ministry called for strengthening prevention work to guard against floods in small rivers and mountainous areas, and enhancing flood control in small and medium-sized reservoirs.
China is expected to see more severe floods in some areas this year.
The middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Haihe River basin, and the Pearl River basin are forecast to see relatively severe flood conditions. ■
