JERUSALEM, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Former WNBA star Liz Cambage has signed with Israeli State Cup holder Maccabi Bnot Ashdod, the club announced on Friday.
Cambage, four-time WNBA All-Star and 2018 top league scorer had spells with the Tulsa Shock, Dallas Wings, Las Vegas Aces, and Los Angeles Sparks.
The 31-year-old Australian center announced her retirement from the WNBA in August last year, three weeks after parting ways with the Sparks.
"Liz is the greatest player to ever come to Israel," Ashdod's General Manager Uri Ben Simon told Xinhua. "Even our players are excited, no one believed that she would join the team."
Ashdod currently leads the Israeli Premier League with 17 wins from 19 games and aims to gain the Israeli double after winning the cup in January.
Cambage's WNBA career covered 167 games with an averaging 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds in 24.5 minutes per game, alongside 11 playoff games.
She also holds the WNBA single-game scoring record, logging 53 points for Dallas against the New York Liberty in July 2018.
In between, she played for the Zhejiang Chouzhou, the Beijing Great Wall, the Shanghai Swordfish, and the Shanxi Flame of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) league.
In the international arena, Cambage took an Olympic bronze medal at London 2012, and a silver medal at the 2018 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
In July 2021, just a week before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, she pulled out of the games, saying that she had been suffering from panic attacks and a lack of sleep. ■
